Reading

Reading Process

  • Read instructional level text with fluency

  • Develop vocabulary by using root words and affixes, context clues, glossary and dictionary

  • Apply comprehension strategies before, during and after reading

  • Compare, contrast and analyze connections between text

Reading Fiction, Poetry, and Drama

  • Recognize text features of poetry, fiction, and drama

  • Make inferences and predictions, identify cause/effect, compare and contrast, and identify author’s purpose

  • Explain examples of figurative language especially simile, metaphor, and personification

Reading Nonfiction

  • Apply information in format, graphics, maps, diagrams, chart and index

  • Use details for the text to restate main idea, to sequence events, to explain cause/effect, to evaluate the accuracy of the information, and to interpret the author’s purpose.

  • Read and follow multi-step directions to complete a task

Writing

Writing Process

  • Follow a writing process in prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, publishing

  • Independently use a graphic organizer to generate a 3- paragraph draft

  • Check for clarity, accuracy, logical order of ideas, consistent voice, and 5th grade conventions

Writing Conventions

  • Use grade level appropriate punctuation, capitalization’s, and spelling

  • Write and edit compound and complex sentences

  • Identify and eliminate fragments in writing

  • Use a variety of sentence structures

  • Identify noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, interjection, conjunction, and direct object

Forms of Writing

  • Write a 4 paragraph personal narrative

  • Use note taking system to organize information

  • Write expository paragraphs, emphasizing compare/contrast

  • Write an expository piece with an introductory paragraph, supporting paragraphs and concluding paragraph

  • Write well-organized communications to different audiences, including friendly letters, business letters, and invitations

  • Write poetry, emphasizing simile, metaphor, personification
